Sharks: The Ocean’s Most
Important Predator
You might think Sharks are very
dangerous monsters in the ocean. You might think that if you’re diving in the
ocean and then sharks appear, you will get killed. Those opinions are very far
from what sharks really are! Now, we will tell you about sharks and your mind
will be changed!
First,
we’ll begin with the general information of shark species. Sharks have lived in
the oceans for more than 450 million years! That was before the biggest living
things ever, Dinosaurs, appeared on our world. There’re about 360 types of
sharks in the world! And all of them are completely different from each other.
The smallest shark is dwarf-dog shark which is only 6-inch long. Meanwhile, the
biggest shark in the world is whale shark which is 60-foot long! But, the whale shark is not dangerous for us because it eats
only plants and small living things in the sea. Sharks have a very good sense.
They can sense the rotten fish or blood in the water. Moreover, they can hear
and tell the direction of underwater sounds that occurred about 2 kilometers
far away.
Sharks
play an important role as they help cleaning the ocean by eating dead and dying
fish. Although they’re that important, sharks get killed over 100 million a
year, only for food and their fins. Many up-scale restaurants in China have a
shark fins soup in their menus. Some of them were killed because of sport.
Sharks can be easily over killed because it took 10-15 years to begin
reproducing and when they’re produced, it’s just a few numbers.
Next, you’ve
already know that even whale sharks are harmless to us. However, most people
don’t know about that because of movies and novels. Sharks rarely kill or even
hurt us. Only 100 people were hurt by them and only 25 get killed by sharks
worldwide! The chances of getting killed by
these predators are because they think we are sea lions swimming in the surface
of water. The statistic shows that there a chance of 1 in 100 million to get
killed by normal sharks! And the chance of getting killed while driving a car
is thousand times higher than killed by sharks! Do you still think that sharks
are a human-eater?

above interesting things about sharks, there is one more thing that very
important for humans and we’re about to tell you.
Sharks
can help prolong our lives. Many scientists discovered that most of them never
get a cancer or an eye cataract. It’s so amazing if compared to us. Moreover,
when they injured, their wounds never get infected and can recover so fast. So, many of scientist are researching about how to get
something from sharks’ body like an extracted chemical of something in their
blood that help them become so healthy. Researches told that chemicals
extracted from Sharks’ cartilage can kill the cancer tumors in lab animals. If
the day that we discovered those keys that help sharks so healthy, we can use
them to prolong our lives.
Now, you
can see that sharks are not a monster at all. They are so important to the
sea’s ecosystem. They can help us to cure those deceases in the near future
also. As there’re many people eating sharks, I hope that you will not be one of
